A carburetor works on Bernoulli's principle: fast-flowing air through a narrow throat has low pressure, which sucks petrol into the air stream to form the fuel-air mixture.

Bernoulli's principle states that in a flowing fluid, where the speed is high the pressure is low, and where the speed is low the pressure is high (for the same height).

In a carburetor of a petrol engine:
