A carburetor works on Bernoulli's principle - fast-moving air has low pressure, which draws fuel into the air stream.

According to Bernoulli's principle, for a flowing fluid the sum of pressure energy, kinetic energy and potential energy per unit volume is constant. Where the speed of the fluid is high, its pressure is low.

In the carburetor of an automobile, air is drawn in and made to pass through a narrow constriction (a venturi). At this constriction the air speed increases, so by Bernoulli's principle the pressure there falls below atmospheric pressure.
