The pendulum's length changes with temperature: it lengthens in summer (T increases, clock slow) and shortens in winter (T decreases, clock fast), because T = 2 pi sqrt(L/g).

A pendulum clock keeps time based on the time period of its pendulum:

T = 2 pi sqrt(L / g)

where L is the length of the pendulum and g is the acceleration due to gravity. The period increases if L increases, and decreases if L decreases.

The metal rod of the pendulum expands or contracts with temperature (thermal expansion):

In summer (hot weather):

  • The pendulum rod expands, so its length L increases.
  • A larger L gives a larger time period T.
  • Each oscillation now takes more time than it should, so the clock makes fewer swings per day - it runs slow (loses time).

In winter (cold weather):

  • The pendulum rod contracts, so its length L decreases. …
