Because T = 2 pi sqrt(L/g), the pendulum's length falls in winter (T decreases, clock fast) and rises in summer (T increases, clock slow), due to thermal contraction and expansion of the rod.

A pendulum clock measures time using the time period of its pendulum:

T = 2 pi sqrt(L / g)

where L is the length of the pendulum and g the acceleration due to gravity. The period increases if L increases and decreases if L decreases.

The metal pendulum rod expands or contracts with temperature:

In winter (cold):

  • The rod contracts, so the length L decreases.
  • Smaller L gives a smaller time period T.
  • Each swing takes less time, so the clock makes more oscillations per day - it gains time and runs fast.

In summer (hot):

  • The rod expands, so the length L increases. …
