The lower fixed point is the melting point of ice and the upper fixed point is the boiling point of water. Celsius: 0 degrees C and 100 degrees C. Fahrenheit: 32 degrees F and 212 degrees F.

To mark a temperature scale, two easily reproducible reference temperatures called fixed points are used:

  • The lower fixed point is the temperature of melting (pure) ice at standard atmospheric pressure.
  • The upper fixed point is the temperature of boiling (pure) water (steam point) at standard atmospheric pressure.

On the Celsius (centigrade) scale:

  • Lower fixed point = 0 degrees C (melting point of ice)
  • Upper fixed point = 100 degrees C (boiling point of water)
  • The interval between them is divided into 100 equal divisions.

On the Fahrenheit scale: …
