The first law of thermodynamics is energy conservation applied to heat and work: heat given to a system either raises its internal energy or is used to do work (or both).

Statement. When a certain quantity of heat ΔQ is supplied to a thermodynamic system, in general part of it increases the internal energy of the system (ΔU) and the rest is used by the system to do external work (ΔW) on its surroundings:

ΔQ=ΔU+ΔW\Delta Q = \Delta U + \Delta W

In differential form, for an infinitesimal process:

dQ=dU+dWdQ = dU + dW

Explanation of terms and sign convention:

  • ΔQ is positive when heat is absorbed by the system, and negative when heat is released by it.
  • ΔW is positive when the system does work on the surroundings (e.g., expansion, ΔW = PΔV for a gas), and negative when work is done on the system (compression).
  • ΔU is the change in internal energy — the sum of the kinetic and potential energies of the molecules of the system. ΔU depends only on the initial and final states (it is a state function), unlike ΔQ and ΔW which depend on the path taken. …
