Concept understanding — Biodiversity

Biodiversity, short for biological diversity, describes the presence of a large number of different species living together within a particular ecosystem. An ecosystem itself is defined as a community of living organisms — both plants and animals — together with their non-living environment (minerals, climate, soil, water and sunlight) and the web of interrelationships connecting them, a definition first formalised by the ecologist A.G. Tansley in 1935.

The specific term "biodiversity" was first introduced by the conservationist Walter Rosen in 1985, and it was subsequently defined and popularised by the biologist E.O. Wilson (referred to as E.D.
