In conjugation, two individuals of a compatible mating type come together and adhere temporarily at their oral surfaces. During this union, each partner's micronucleus undergoes a specialised division, and the two individuals exchange a portion of this micronuclear genetic material — specifically, a migratory pronucleus from each partner crosses over into the other, where it fuses with that partner's own retained (stationary) pronucleus, restoring a diploid nucleus carrying genetic contributions from both original individuals.
