Running obliquely along one side of the body is the oral groove, a ciliated depression that channels water and suspended food particles toward the cytostome (cell mouth) and then into the cytopharynx (cell gullet), where food vacuoles form for digestion. The entire cell surface is densely covered by numerous short cilia, organised into longitudinal rows called kineties, whose coordinated (typically metachronous) beating both propels the cell through water and helps sweep food particles toward the oral groove.
