An osteon, or Haversian system, is the cylindrical structural unit that compact bone is built from.

Definition: An osteon (Haversian system) is the basic structural and functional unit of compact (dense) bone. Each osteon is a roughly cylindrical structure running parallel to the long axis of the bone, consisting of:

  • A central Haversian canal, which carries blood vessels, nerves and lymphatics that nourish the bone tissue.
  • Concentric rings of bone matrix called lamellae, laid down around the canal like the rings of a tree trunk.
