An osteon, or Haversian system, is the repeating cylindrical unit that makes up compact (dense) bone tissue.

Definition: An osteon is the basic structural and functional unit of compact bone. Each osteon is a roughly cylindrical structure oriented along the long axis of the bone, consisting of:

  • A central Haversian canal, which houses blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves supplying the bone tissue.
  • Concentric rings of bony matrix called lamellae, laid down around the Haversian canal.
  • Osteocytes (mature bone cells) located in small spaces called lacunae between the lamellae, interconnected by tiny channels called canaliculi, through which nutrients and waste are exchanged.
  • Volkmann's canals, which run transversely and connect neighbouring Haversian canals to each other and to the periosteum, allowing the blood supply to reach all parts of the bone. …
