Lymph is the fluid connective tissue that collects excess tissue fluid, returns it (with proteins and absorbed fats) to the blood, and plays a key role in immunity.

Formation: As blood flows through capillaries, some plasma (along with dissolved substances but very few proteins and no RBCs) filters out through the thin capillary walls into the surrounding intercellular (tissue) spaces, forming interstitial/tissue fluid. Much of this fluid is reabsorbed back into the capillaries, but the remainder is picked up by blind-ended lymphatic capillaries, at which point it is called lymph.

Composition: Lymph resembles blood plasma but is more dilute - it is colourless, contains less protein than plasma, no red blood cells, and its principal cellular component is the lymphocyte (a type of white blood cell). Lymph collected from the small intestine after a fatty meal appears milky and is called chyle, because it carries absorbed fats via structures called lacteals.

Functions:

  1. Drainage - returns excess tissue fluid (and the small amount of protein that leaked out of capillaries) back to the venous blood, via lymphatic vessels that eventually join the blood circulatory system, preventing accumulation of fluid in tissues (oedema). …
