A Haversian system (osteon) is a unit of compact bone made of a central Haversian canal (with blood vessels) surrounded by concentric lamellae, with osteocytes in lacunae connected by canaliculi.

Explanation:

  • Compact (dense) bone is made up of many cylindrical structural units called HAVERSIAN SYSTEMS or OSTEONS, running parallel to the long axis of the bone.

Parts of a Haversian system:

  1. Haversian canal:
  • A central longitudinal canal that contains blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerve fibres, which nourish the bone.

  1. Lamellae:
  • Around the Haversian canal, the bony matrix is arranged in a number of CONCENTRIC RINGS (layers) called lamellae.

  1. Lacunae:
  • Small fluid-filled spaces present between the lamellae; each lacuna contains a bone cell (OSTEOCYTE).

  1. Canaliculi:
  • Fine radiating channels that connect the lacunae with one another and with the Haversian canal; they allow exchange of nutrients and wastes between the osteocytes and the blood in the canal.

  • Adjacent Haversian canals are connected by transverse Volkmann's canals.
