A sesamoid bone forms inside a tendon rather than articulating directly with other bones in the usual way; the patella (kneecap) is the classic example.

Most bones of the skeleton develop either in cartilage (endochondral ossification) or in connective tissue membrane (intramembranous ossification) as part of the main skeletal framework. A sesamoid bone is different: it is a small, rounded bone that ossifies within the substance of a tendon, typically at a point where the tendon passes over a joint or bony prominence and experiences considerable friction and compressive/shearing force.

Function:
