Tendons attach muscle to bone (transmit the pull of a contracting muscle); ligaments attach bone to bone (hold joints together).

Both tendons and ligaments are dense connective tissue structures, but they differ in what they connect and in composition:

Tendon

  • Connects a skeletal muscle to a bone.
  • Made of dense regular white fibrous connective tissue, composed mainly of parallel bundles of collagen fibres.
  • Strong, rope-like, and largely inelastic (non-stretchy) — this is essential so that the force generated by a contracting muscle is transmitted efficiently to move the bone, without being absorbed as stretch.
  • Example: the Achilles tendon connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone.

Ligament

  • Connects one bone to another bone across a joint.
  • Made of dense yellow elastic connective tissue, rich in elastin fibres along with collagen. …
