Q.Y, a consignee, is allowed an ordinary commission of 5% plus a del credere commission of 2% on total sales. During the year he sold, entirely on credit, goods worth Rs 40,000 on behalf of the consignor, but one customer who had purchased goods worth Rs 3,000 subsequently failed to pay.
(i) Calculate the total commission payable to Y.
(ii) Explain, giving reasons, how the Rs 3,000 bad debt is dealt with in the books of the consignor.

- Del credere commission exists for exactly this situation: in exchange for the extra 2%, Y personally guarantees that the consignor will receive the full sale proceeds of every credit sale he makes, regardless of whether the individual customer actually pays. This means the consignor records his sales, and the amount due from Y, at the full Rs 40,000 — the debt is treated as realised through Y. When the customer who bought Rs 3,000 worth of goods defaults, that loss falls entirely on Y, in his personal capacity, precisely because he has already been compensated for taking on that risk through the del credere commission.
