A bill of lading is a document issued by a shipping company that acknowledges receipt of goods for shipment. It is at once a receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage by sea, and a document of title that can be transferred to pass ownership of the goods.

In foreign trade carried on by sea (a TS Inter 2nd-year Commerce topic aligned with the NCERT/CBSE commerce curriculum), a bill of lading is a document prepared by the exporter and signed by the shipping company (or its agent) when the goods are loaded on the ship. It performs three roles:
