A bill of lading is a very important document in international trade when goods are transported by sea. It is issued and signed by the shipping company (or its agent) and serves three purposes. First, it is a receipt acknowledging that the goods described in it have been received on board the ship for carriage. Second, it is a contract of carriage between the exporter and the shipping company, stating the terms on which the goods will be carried. Third, and most importantly, it is a document of title to the goods, which means the lawful holder of the bill of lading is entitled to claim and take delivery of the goods at the port of destination.
