A bill of lading is a document issued by the shipping company to the exporter acknowledging that the goods have been received on board the ship for carriage by sea. It is at the same time a receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage and a document of title, so the holder can claim the goods at the destination port.

In foreign trade, when goods are exported by sea, the shipping company (or its agent) issues a document called the bill of lading to the exporter after the goods are loaded on the ship. It is a very important shipping document and serves three purposes at once: (1) it is a receipt given by the shipping company for the goods received for carriage; (2) it is evidence of the contract of carriage between the exporter and the shipping company, showing the terms on which the goods will be carried; and (3) it is a document of title to the goods, meaning that the person who lawfully holds it is treated as the owner and can claim the goods at the port of destination.
