- Staffing: The managerial function of filling, and keeping filled, the positions in an organisation structure — achieved by identifying the workforce required and then recruiting, selecting, placing, promoting, appraising and developing the right people for the right jobs.
- Personnel Management: The traditional, largely administrative approach to managing people — looking after matters such as employees' salaries, welfare, working conditions and records — that Human Resource Management has now replaced.
- Human Resource Management (HRM): The specialised, wider modern function of managing people, carried out (in larger firms) by a separate Human Resource Department of specialists; it treats staff as valuable human resources and covers finding, evaluating and building a working relationship with people, for a purpose.
- Recruitment: The process of searching for prospective employees and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organisation, so as to build a pool of suitable candidates.
- Selection: The process of identifying and choosing the best person out of the pool of prospective candidates developed at the recruitment stage — a series of steps at which unsuitable candidates are progressively eliminated.
- Training: A short-term process by which the aptitudes, skills and abilities of employees to perform a specific job are increased; it is aimed more at the needs of the current or intended job than at the individual.
- Development: The broader, career-oriented and ongoing learning designed to help an employee grow — improving not only job performance but the overall growth of the personality; development includes training. …
