Some enzymes are made of two parts working together: a protein component and a non-protein component. The protein component, called the apoenzyme, is inactive on its own - it cannot catalyse the reaction unless it is joined by its partner. The co-factor is that partner: a non-protein substance (which may be an organic prosthetic group, an organic co-enzyme, or an inorganic metal ion) that combines with the apoenzyme to complete the enzyme's structure.
