In co-dominance both alleles of a heterozygote are expressed fully and separately (not blended); the ABO blood group, where I(A)I(B) gives AB blood (both A and B antigens), is the standard example.

Co-dominance is a type of gene interaction in which, in the heterozygous condition, both alleles express themselves fully and independently. The heterozygote is not intermediate (as in incomplete dominance); instead it shows the phenotypic effect of both alleles simultaneously.

Example - Human ABO blood groups:

The ABO blood group in humans is controlled by three alleles: I(A), I(B) and i. The alleles I(A) and I(B) each produce a specific surface sugar (antigen) on the red blood cells:

  • I(A) produces antigen A,
  • I(B) produces antigen B,
  • i produces no antigen. …
