Respiratory energy is captured in stages as ATP, then released again by breaking ATP down wherever the cell needs energy.

If glucose were oxidised completely in one single step, almost all of the energy released would simply escape as heat, which a cell cannot use to do biological work. To make this energy useful, the cell's strategy is to oxidise glucose through many small, controlled steps instead, so that at particular points the amount of energy released is just the right size to be coupled to a useful chemical change.

This stepwise release happens across the whole respiratory pathway:

  • In glycolysis, the conversion of 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate to 3-phosphoglyceric acid, and later of phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvic acid, are both energy-yielding steps where ATP is generated directly by transferring a phosphate group — substrate-level phosphorylation.
  • In the citric acid cycle, the conversion of succinyl-CoA to succinic acid similarly generates GTP, which is converted to ATP.
  • Elsewhere, instead of ATP, the energy is captured as reducing power, with NAD+ or FAD+ accepting hydrogen to become NADH + H+ or FADH2. …
