Amino acids are classified as essential (diet-required) or non-essential (body-synthesized).

Essential amino acids

These are amino acids that the human body cannot synthesize on its own (or cannot synthesize in sufficient quantity) and therefore must be obtained through the diet. They are essential for normal growth and health.

Example: Valine (also leucine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, etc.)

Non-essential amino acids

These are amino acids that the human body is capable of synthesizing in adequate amounts on its own, through its normal metabolic pathways, and hence need not necessarily come from the diet.

Example: Glycine (also alanine, serine, aspartic acid, etc.)
