Hormones are chemical messengers secreted by endocrine glands into the blood; examples - steroid: estrogen; polypeptide: insulin; amino-acid derivative: adrenaline (thyroxine).

Hormones are chemical messengers - substances secreted in very small amounts by the ductless (endocrine) glands directly into the bloodstream. They are carried to their target organs, where they regulate, control and coordinate various biological activities such as growth, metabolism, reproduction and response to stress. They maintain the balance of body functions and are neither enzymes nor vitamins.

Based on their chemical nature, hormones are grouped as:

  1. Steroid hormones - derived from cholesterol. Example: estrogen and testosterone (sex hormones), or cortisol (from the adrenal cortex).
