Glycine is the one amino acid whose α\alpha-carbon is not chiral (two H atoms attached), so it alone among the common amino acids is optically inactive; all the others, such as alanine, are optically active.

Optically active example — alanine

Alanine, CH3−C∗H(NH2)−COOHCH_3-\overset{*}{C}H(NH_2)-COOH, has its α\alpha-carbon bonded to four different groups: −CH3-CH_3, −NH2-NH_2, −COOH-COOH, and −H-H. This makes it a chiral (asymmetric) centre, so alanine exists as a pair of enantiomers and rotates the plane of plane-polarised light — it is optically active.
