Antacids are basic compounds/drugs that neutralize excess stomach acid (HCl) to relieve hyperacidity.

Antacids are a class of drugs (chemical compounds) that neutralize the excess hydrochloric acid (HCl) secreted by the gastric glands in the stomach, thereby raising the pH and providing relief from acidity, indigestion, and heartburn.

They work by simple acid-base neutralization: the antacid (a mild base) reacts with excess HCl present in gastric juice.

For example, with magnesium hydroxide:

Mg(OH)2+2HCl→MgCl2+2H2OMg(OH)_2 + 2HCl \rightarrow MgCl_2 + 2H_2O

Examples of antacids:

  1. Magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)₂ — commonly known as Milk of Magnesia.
  2. Aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)₃.
  3. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), NaHCO₃. …
