The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to help digestion. An excess of this acid causes acidity, irritation and pain.
Antacids are chemicals that remove or neutralise this excess acid:
- Simple antacids are weak/mild bases such as sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3), magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia) and aluminium hydroxide. They react with and neutralise the excess HCl, raising the stomach pH.
- A limitation of these is that they only treat the symptom; excessive use can make the stomach alkaline and trigger even more acid. …
