Antacids are chemical substances that remove or neutralise the excess hydrochloric acid produced in the stomach and raise the pH to a suitable level, thereby giving relief from acidity, hyperacidity and acid indigestion.
Two types:
- Neutralising antacids (mild bases) that directly neutralise the acid, such as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and metal hydroxides like magnesium hydroxide and aluminium hydroxide (the mixture is 'milk of magnesia').
- Drugs that control the SECRETION of acid, such as histamine H2-receptor blockers - ranitidine (Zantac) and cimetidine - and proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole. …
