IUPAC names: (a) tetraammineaquachloridocobalt(III) chloride, (b) tetracarbonylnickel(0), (c) potassium hexacyanidoferrate(III), (d) tetraamminetriaquachromium(III) chloride.

Rules used: ligands are named in alphabetical order before the metal; neutral ligand H2O = aqua, NH3 = ammine, CO = carbonyl; anionic ligands Cl- = chlorido, CN- = cyanido; the metal's oxidation state is shown in Roman numerals; in an anionic complex the metal name ends in -ate.

a) [Co(NH3)4(H2O)Cl]Cl2:

  • Oxidation state: complex ion charge is +2, ligand charges: 4 NH3 (0) + H2O (0) + Cl (-1) = -1, so Co = +2 -(-1) = +3.
  • Ligands alphabetically: ammine, aqua, chlorido.
  • Name: Tetraammineaquachloridocobalt(III) chloride.

b) [Ni(CO)4]:

  • CO is neutral, complex is neutral, so Ni = 0.
  • Name: Tetracarbonylnickel(0).

c) K3[Fe(CN)6]:

  • Complex ion is [Fe(CN)6]3-; 6 CN(-1) = -6, so Fe = +3. …
