Question

Q.(a) Write IUPAC names of the following coordination compounds :

(i) [Ag(NH3)2][Ag(CN)2][Ag(NH_3)_2][Ag(CN)_2]
(ii) K3[Fe(C2O4)3]K_3[Fe(C_2O_4)_3]
(OR)
(b)
(i) Give a chemical test to show that [Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl[Co(NH_3)_5SO_4]Cl and [Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]SO_4 are ionisation isomers.
(ii) What is meant by the ‘Chelate effect’ ? Give an example.

(a)(i) Diamminesilver(I) dicyanidoargentate(I); (a)(ii) Potassium tris(oxalato)ferrate(III). (b)(i) Add BaCl2BaCl_2 — only [Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]SO_4 (free sulfate) gives a white BaSO4BaSO_4 precipitate; (b)(ii) the chelate effect is the enhanced stability of ring-forming polydentate ligands, e.g. [Ni(en)3]2+>[Ni(NH3)6]2+[Ni(en)_3]^{2+} > [Ni(NH_3)_6]^{2+}.

Part (a) — IUPAC names

Rules: cation named before anion; within a complex, ligands in alphabetical order then the metal with its oxidation number in Roman numerals; an anionic complex takes the -ate suffix on the metal.

(i) [Ag(NH3)2][Ag(CN)2][Ag(NH_3)_2][Ag(CN)_2] — two complex ions.

  • Cation [Ag(NH3)2]+[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+: two ammine ligands (neutral) → Ag is +1 → diamminesilver(I).
  • Anion [Ag(CN)2]−[Ag(CN)_2]^-: two cyanido ligands (−1-1 each) with overall −1-1 → Ag is +1; anionic → dicyanidoargentate(I).
  • Full name: Diamminesilver(I) dicyanidoargentate(I).

(ii) K3[Fe(C2O4)3]K_3[Fe(C_2O_4)_3]

  • Cation: potassium (K+K^+).
  • Anion [Fe(C2O4)3]3−[Fe(C_2O_4)_3]^{3-}: oxalato (C2O42−C_2O_4^{2-}) is a bidentate ligand, so three of them are named with the bracket prefix tris(oxalato). Fe: x+3(−2)=−3⇒x=+3x + 3(-2) = -3 \Rightarrow x = +3; anionic → ferrate. …
