(a)(i) Dichloridobis(ethane-1,2-diamine)platinum(IV) sulfate; (a)(ii) Ammonium tetrafluoridocobaltate(II). (b)(i) An ambidentate ligand binds through two different donor atoms, e.g. NO2−NO_2^-; (b)(ii) a double salt dissociates completely into simple ions in water, e.g. KAl(SO4)2⋅12H2OKAl(SO_4)_2\cdot 12H_2O.

Part (a) — IUPAC names

Treat a coordination compound like an ionic compound: name the cation first, then the anion. Inside a complex ion, name the ligands in alphabetical order (ignore the multiplying prefixes di-, tri-, bis-), then the metal with its oxidation state in Roman numerals in parentheses. If the complex ion is an anion, the metal name takes the -ate ending.

(i) [PtCl2(en)2]SO4[PtCl_2(en)_2]SO_4

The square bracket carries the charge; since the counter ion is SO42−SO_4^{2-}, the complex is the cation [PtCl2(en)2]2+[PtCl_2(en)_2]^{2+}.

  • Ligands: two chlorido (Cl−Cl^-) and two ethane-1,2-diamine (en, a neutral bidentate ligand). Alphabetically "chlorido" (c) precedes "ethane-1,2-diamine" (e).
  • Because "ethane-1,2-diamine" itself contains a multiplying-type name, the prefix for two of them is bis → bis(ethane-1,2-diamine); two chloridos → dichlorido.
  • Oxidation state of Pt: x+2(−1)+2(0)=+2⇒x=+4x + 2(-1) + 2(0) = +2 \Rightarrow x = +4.

Name: Dichloridobis(ethane-1,2-diamine)platinum(IV) sulfate.

Watch out

Do not confuse the charge on the cation (+2, fixed by the sulfate) with the oxidation number of Pt (+4). Solve x+(ligand charges)=(ion charge)x + \text{(ligand charges)} = \text{(ion charge)} every time.

(ii) (NH4)2[CoF4](NH_4)_2[CoF_4]

Here the cation is outside the bracket (NH4+NH_4^+) and the complex is the anion [CoF4]2−[CoF_4]^{2-}.

  • Ligand: four fluorido → tetrafluorido.
  • Oxidation state of Co: x+4(−1)=−2⇒x=+2x + 4(-1) = -2 \Rightarrow x = +2.
  • Anionic complex → cobalt becomes cobaltate. …
