Faraday's two laws of electrolysis connect the amount of charge passed through an electrolyte to the amount of substance deposited or liberated at the electrodes.

Faraday's First Law of Electrolysis: The mass (m) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge (Q) passed through the electrolyte.

m∝Qm \propto Q

m=Z⋅Q=Z⋅I⋅tm = Z \cdot Q = Z \cdot I \cdot t

where II is the current in amperes, tt is the time in seconds, and ZZ is the electrochemical equivalent of the substance (the mass deposited by passing one coulomb of charge).

Faraday's Second Law of Electrolysis: When the same quantity of electricity is passed through different electrolytes/electrolytic cells connected in series, the masses of the substances deposited or liberated at the electrodes are directly proportional to their chemical equivalent weights (equivalent mass).

m1E1=m2E2\dfrac{m_1}{E_1} = \dfrac{m_2}{E_2}
