Electrolysis decomposes an electrolyte using electricity; Faraday's first law quantifies how much substance is deposited: W = Zit.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the chemical process in which a compound (electrolyte), in the molten state or as an aqueous solution, is decomposed into its constituent ions by passing a direct electric current through it via two electrodes. Cations migrate to the cathode and get reduced (gain electrons), while anions migrate to the anode and get oxidized (lose electrons). This converts electrical energy into chemical energy.

Faraday's First Law of Electrolysis

The law states that the mass (w) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electric charge (Q) passed through the electrolyte.

w∝Qw \propto Q

w=Z⋅Q=Z⋅i⋅tw = Z \cdot Q = Z \cdot i \cdot t

where:

  • Z is the electrochemical equivalent of the substance (a constant characteristic of the substance, equal to the mass deposited by passing 1 coulomb of charge),
  • i is the current in amperes, …
