Faraday's first law of electrolysis links the mass of substance liberated at an electrode to the total charge passed.

Faraday's first law of electrolysis states: "The mass (m) of a substance deposited or liberated at an electrode during electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity (charge, Q) passed through the electrolyte."

Mathematically:

m proportional to Q

m = Z x Q

Since charge Q = current (I) x time (t) (when current is steady):

m = Z x I x t

Here Z is a constant called the electrochemical equivalent of the substance - it is the mass of the substance deposited by passing 1 ampere of current for 1 second (i.e., by 1 coulomb of charge).
