Froth floatation concentrates sulphide ores: oil-wetted sulphide particles float up with the froth while water-wetted gangue sinks.

Froth floatation is used mainly to concentrate sulphide ores (e.g. galena PbS, zinc blende ZnS, copper pyrites) because sulphide mineral surfaces are preferentially wetted by oil while the earthy gangue is preferentially wetted by water.

Process:

  1. The finely powdered ore is taken in a large tank containing water and a small amount of pine oil (or other collector/frothing agent).
  2. Air is blown vigorously through the mixture, or it is agitated, to produce a froth.
  3. The sulphide ore particles become coated with oil (hydrophobic) and cling to the air bubbles, so they rise to the surface as a mineral-rich froth.
  4. The gangue particles are wetted by water and sink to the bottom.
  5. The froth carrying the concentrated ore is skimmed off, dried, and the ore is recovered. …
