Application 1 — Purification of water
Muddy/turbid water contains negatively charged colloidal clay particles. Adding alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) supplies Al³⁺ ions, which neutralize the charge on the clay particles and coagulate them, making them settle out, thereby purifying the water.
Application 2 — Cottrell's electrostatic precipitator
Smoke is a colloidal dispersion of solid carbon particles in air. In Cottrell's precipitator, smoke is passed through a chamber containing electrodes maintained at a very high potential; the charged smoke particles are attracted to the oppositely charged electrode and get neutralized/precipitated, allowing clean air to escape the chimney.
Other examples (any two of these are also valid)
- Medicines: colloidal (finely divided) medicines are more easily absorbed by the body and hence more effective, e.g., colloidal antimony and colloidal gold used in medicine. …
