Q.Distinguish between the meaning of the terms adsorption and absorption. Give one example of each.
Step 1 – Adsorption (surface phenomenon). The molecular species accumulate only at the surface and their concentration there is higher than in the bulk. It is a fast, surface process.
Example: gases (e.g. ) held on the surface of charcoal; water vapour on silica gel.
Step 2 – Absorption (bulk phenomenon). The substance is uniformly distributed throughout the body of the absorbing material; concentration is the same everywhere. It is comparatively slow.
Example: water vapour taken up throughout anhydrous calcium chloride; gas dissolving uniformly in water.
Step 3 – Sorption. If both occur together (as with dyes on cotton), the process is called sorption.
Adsorption = surface accumulation (e.g. gas on charcoal); absorption = uniform uptake through the bulk (e.g. water vapour in anhydrous ).
