Magnetic declination is the angular difference between true (geographic) north and the direction a compass needle points (magnetic north) at a location, because the Earth's magnetic and geographic axes don't coincide.

Magnetic declination

At any place on the Earth's surface, the geographic meridian is the vertical plane containing the longitude circle and the Earth's axis of rotation (i.e., the true north-south direction). The magnetic meridian is the vertical plane containing the axis of a freely suspended magnetic needle at that place (i.e., the direction a compass points, along the horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field).

Because the Earth's magnetic poles are not exactly located at its geographic poles, these two meridians generally do not coincide at a given place.
