A real image forms exactly at the position of the object (for a concave mirror) only when the object is placed at the centre of curvature; here that gives R = 40 cm and f = R/2 = 20 cm.

For a concave mirror, a real, inverted image of the same size as the object is formed exactly at the object's own location only in one special case: when the object is placed at the centre of curvature (C) of the mirror. This is because rays from the object strike the mirror along the normal (passing through C) and are reflected straight back along the same path, converging again at C.
