A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) has three terminals — Emitter (E), Base (B) and Collector (C) — and is represented in circuit diagrams by a symbol showing the base as a straight vertical line, with the emitter and collector as slanted lines touching it, the emitter lead carrying an arrowhead.
p-n-p transistor symbol:
The emitter arrow points inward, toward the base. This indicates that, in normal (forward-active) operation, conventional current flows from the emitter into the base region (since the p-type emitter injects holes into the n-type base), i.e. current flows into the transistor at the emitter terminal.
n-p-n transistor symbol:
The emitter arrow points outward, away from the base. This indicates that conventional current flows out of the transistor at the emitter (since the n-type emitter injects electrons into the p-type base, and conventional current — opposite to electron flow — flows out through the emitter).
