A rectifier uses the one-way conduction of a p-n junction diode to convert alternating current into direct current.
Half-wave rectifier:
- Uses a single diode.
- The diode conducts only during the half-cycle when it is forward biased (say the positive half); during the other half it is reverse biased and blocks current.
- Output appears only in alternate half-cycles - pulsating DC with gaps.
- Ripple is high, and the rectification efficiency is low (about 40.6% maximum). Only half the input power reaches the load.
Full-wave rectifier:
- Uses two diodes with a centre-tapped transformer, or four diodes in a bridge arrangement.
- One diode (or pair) conducts during the positive half, the other during the negative half, so current flows through the load in the SAME direction during both halves. …
