Full-wave rectifier — a centre-tapped transformer feeds diodes D1 and D2 whose outputs drive the load resistor R_L; below, the input waveforms at A and B and the rectified output across R_L (alternate half-cycles conducted by D1 and D2)
Full-wave rectifier — a centre-tapped transformer feeds diodes D1 and D2 whose outputs drive the load resistor R_L; below, the input waveforms at A and B and the rectified output across R_L (alternate half-cycles conducted by D1 and D2)

With two diodes and a centre-tapped transformer, one diode conducts each half-cycle so the load current is unidirectional for the whole a.c. cycle — full-wave rectification.

(This is the main alternative of an internal-choice (OR) question.)

Circuit. A centre-tapped transformer feeds two pp-nn junction diodes D1D_1 and D2D_2; their outputs join and pass through the load resistance RLR_L, with the centre tap returning to the load.

            D1
  A o----->|-----+
         |       |
  (CT)o--+------ +---[ R_L ]---o (output)
         |       |
  B o----->|-----+
            D2

Working.

  • Positive half-cycle: end AA is positive, so diode D1D_1 is forward-biased (conducts) while D2D_2 is reverse-biased (blocked). Current flows from AA through D1D_1, through RLR_L, and back to the centre tap.
  • Negative half-cycle: now end BB is positive, so diode D2D_2 conducts while D1D_1 is blocked. Current flows from BB through D2D_2, through RLR_L, and back to the centre tap. …
