Intrinsic semiconductors are chemically pure crystals with equal electron-hole pairs from thermal generation; extrinsic semiconductors are intrinsic crystals deliberately doped with impurities to enhance one type of charge carrier.

Intrinsic semiconductor: A semiconductor in its pure form, such as pure silicon or germanium, is called an intrinsic semiconductor. At absolute zero it behaves as an insulator (valence band full, conduction band empty). At room temperature, thermal energy breaks a small number of covalent bonds, so an electron is excited from the valence band to the conduction band, leaving behind a hole. Since every electron promoted to the conduction band leaves exactly one hole in the valence band, the electron concentration (n_e) equals the hole concentration (n_h) in an intrinsic semiconductor: n_e = n_h = n_i. Conductivity is low and strongly temperature-dependent.

Extrinsic semiconductor: When a small, controlled amount of impurity is added to an intrinsic semiconductor - a process called doping - the resulting material is an extrinsic semiconductor, with vastly increased and tunable conductivity. …
