Q.The shape of a stretched string is recorded at five successive instants during one full period TT: at t=0t=0 the string is a sinusoidal curve (with the transverse displacement on the vertical axis and position xx on the horizontal axis, marked at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50); at t=T/4t=T/4 the string is completely straight (zero displacement everywhere); at t=T/2t=T/2 the string is again sinusoidal but inverted relative to t=0t=0; at t=3T/4t=3T/4 it is completely straight once more; and at t=Tt=T it has returned to exactly the shape it had at t=0t=0. The transverse pattern repeats every 20 units along xx. Interpret what kind of wave this is and find its wavelength.

The string is shown at t=0, T/4, T/2, 3T/4, Tt=0,\ T/4,\ T/2,\ 3T/4,\ T: sinusoidal at t=0t=0, completely straight at t=T/4t=T/4, inverted at t=T/2t=T/2, straight again at t=3T/4t=3T/4, and back to the original shape at t=Tt=T. Because the whole string goes momentarily flat and the shape does not travel along xx, this is a stationary (standing) wave. Its repeat length read from the axis is λ=20\lambda = 20 cm.

Why it is a stationary wave

A stationary wave has the form

y(x,t)=2a sin⁡kx cos⁡ωt.y(x,t) = 2a\,\sin kx \,\cos\omega t. …
