- Causative agent: It is caused by influenza A viruses. The strain most associated with serious outbreaks is H5N1 (named after its surface proteins haemagglutinin H and neuraminidase N).
- Hosts and spread: It mainly affects domestic poultry (chickens, ducks, turkeys) and wild birds. It spreads very rapidly among birds through their secretions and droppings, and can cause very high mortality in poultry flocks.
- Effect on humans: The virus can occasionally cross over and infect humans who come in close contact with infected birds (poultry workers). In humans it causes high fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulty (respiratory distress) and can be fatal. However, human-to-human spread is limited. …
