Cancer is a disease caused by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells that lose contact inhibition, forming a mass called a tumour. Malignant tumours can spread (metastasise) to other parts of the body. Based on the tissue of origin, cancers are of the following main types:
- Carcinomas:

Arise from epithelial cells, i.e. the skin and the tissues lining the internal organs and glands.

Examples: skin cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer.

These are the most common type of human cancers.
- Sarcomas:

Arise from mesodermal connective and supportive tissues such as bones, cartilage, muscles, fat and blood vessels.
