The human heart is a four-chambered, myogenic muscular pump (Body Fluids and Circulation, NCERT Class 11 Biology) — its beat originates within its own muscle. Its working is a repeating sequence called the cardiac cycle:
Conducting system (control of the beat):
- The Sino-Atrial (SA) node in the right atrium is the pacemaker; it generates the impulse that starts each heartbeat.
- The impulse spreads over both atria, reaches the Atrio-Ventricular (AV) node, and passes down the Bundle of His and Purkinje fibres into the ventricle walls.
Stages of the cardiac cycle (about 0.8 second each):
- Atrial systole (contraction): Triggered by the SA node, both atria contract and push blood through the atrio-ventricular valves (tricuspid on the right, bicuspid/mitral on the left) into the ventricles.
- Ventricular systole: The impulse reaches the ventricles, which contract. The AV valves close (producing the first heart sound 'LUBB'), and blood is forced out through the semilunar valves — from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery (to the lungs) and from the left ventricle into the aorta (to the body).
- Joint diastole (relaxation): Atria and ventricles relax. The semilunar valves close (second heart sound 'DUP'), and the atria refill with blood from the veins, ready for the next cycle. …
