Eupnoea (normal breathing) is driven by the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles, which change thoracic volume.

Diaphragm: a dome-shaped muscular sheet separating the thoracic and abdominal cavities. On contraction it flattens, increasing the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity — this causes inspiration.

External intercostal muscles: these run between the ribs; their contraction lifts the ribs and sternum outward and upward, increasing the antero-posterior and lateral dimensions of the thorax — this also aids inspiration.
