Breathing works by Boyle's-law pressure changes: muscle contraction enlarges the thoracic cavity to pull air in (inspiration), and muscle relaxation (aided by elastic recoil) shrinks it to push air out (expiration).

Inspiration (active process):

  1. The diaphragm (a dome-shaped muscle at the floor of the thoracic cavity) contracts and flattens, moving downward.
  2. The external intercostal muscles contract, lifting the ribs and sternum upward and outward.
  3. Together, these actions increase the volume of the thoracic (chest) cavity in all dimensions (vertical, antero-posterior, and lateral).
  4. Since the lungs are elastic and adhere to the thoracic wall via the pleural membranes, they expand along with the thoracic cavity, which decreases the pulmonary (intra-pulmonary) pressure to below atmospheric pressure.
  5. This pressure gradient causes air to flow from the region of higher pressure (atmosphere) into the lungs (region of lower pressure) through the respiratory passages, until pulmonary pressure equals atmospheric pressure - this is inspiration.

Expiration (normally a passive process):

  1. The diaphragm relaxes and returns to its original dome shape, moving upward.
  2. The external intercostal muscles relax, and the ribs and sternum move back down and inward due to gravity and the elastic recoil of the lung and thoracic tissues.
  3. This decreases the volume of the thoracic cavity, which increases the pulmonary pressure to above atmospheric pressure.
  4. Air then flows out of the lungs into the atmosphere, from the region of higher pressure (lungs) to lower pressure (atmosphere) - this is expiration. …
